Grocery Stores Open With Regular Hours

Albertsons stores will be open regular hours on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25. Boise-area Albertsons locations operate from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Walmart, Target, Trader Joe's and ALDI will all be open on Memorial Day, according to LiveNOW from FOX. Aldi stores will be open on a reduced-hours schedule, with many ALDI stores closing earlier than usual, often around 4 p.m. local time.

Whole Foods stores will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. or 10 p.m., depending on the location. Most Kroger stores are open on Memorial Day 2026 and operate during standard business hours for holiday shoppers.

Fred Meyer stores will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Costco Closed, Sam's Club Open With Modified Hours

Costco is one of the few major retailers that closes all warehouses in observance of the holiday. Costco remains one of the most notable retailers that closes all warehouse locations nationwide for Memorial Day each year, and both independent holiday trackers and recent retail reports confirm Costco warehouses will close on Monday, May 25, 2026.

Pharmacies Open, But Hours Vary

CVS will be open on Memorial Day, but some locations may have altered hours, so it's best to check your local CVS for hours of operation.

Walgreens stores will be open. However, 24-hour pharmacies are typically open, while other locations may be closed or have modified hours.

CVS, Walgreens, and pharmacies within other stores will generally be open, but hours vary greatly by location. Giant Eagle pharmacies typically operate on a shortened holiday schedule from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Idaho Liquor Stores Closed by Law

Under Idaho Code 23-307(b), liquor sales are prohibited in the Gem State on Thanksgiving, Christmas and Memorial Day.

According to the Idaho Liquor Division, Memorial Day (Monday, May 25): All state-run and contract stores are closed.

Retailers are not allowed to sell alcohol on Sunday, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Local counties have the option to permit the sale of liquor on a few of those days, however, not on Christmas Day.

Idaho operates a hybrid alcohol control system. While classified as a control state, Idaho operates a nuanced system where the state controls the sale of higher-proof spirits through state-operated stores, but allows private distribution for wine (16% ABV and under), low-proof spirits (14% ABV and under), and malt beverages.

Big-Box and Department Stores Open

Hobby Lobby will remain open for Memorial Day in 2026, with most Hobby Lobby locations opening at 9 a.m. but closing early at 5:30 p.m., rather than their usual 8 p.m. closing time.

Hardware Stores Open for DIY Projects

Memorial Day is widely considered a major DIY weekend. The extra day makes it the perfect time for home improvement projects.

Most Ace Hardware stores will be open regular business hours, typically 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., although hours may vary by location.

Home Depot stores will be open regular hours, typically from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Lowe's stores will be open, typically from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Menards stores will be open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Government Offices, Banks and Post Offices Closed

Post offices, banks, and stock markets are closed on Memorial Day.

The U.S. Postal Service will be closed on Memorial Day, and there will be no mail delivery and all post office locations will be closed.

The Federal Reserve is closed on Memorial Day, which means most banks will also be closed. The New York Stock Exchange and stock markets are also closed on Memorial Day.

UPS will also be closed for deliveries on Memorial Day, although some UPS stores may be open. It's best to check with your local store to be sure. UPS Express Critical service will be available.

Boise Cemeteries Staffed for Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day weekend will be observed at Morris Hill Cemetery (317 N. Latah St.) Saturday, May 23 through Monday, May 25, 2026. Staff will be on-site to assist the public in identifying grave locations.

Fort Boise Military Reserve Cemetery (1101 Mountain Cove Rd.) and Pioneer Cemetery (460 E. Warm Springs Ave.), also maintained by Boise Parks and Recreation, will be open to the public on Memorial Day weekend but will not be staffed.

The Idaho Civil War Volunteers (ICWV) plan to conduct their annual ceremonies on Memorial Day, including a brief presentation about some of the soldiers interred at the cemeteries, a 21-gun salute and the playing of taps.

Visitors are welcome to place artificial flowers, flags, fresh flowers and wreaths graveside at city cemeteries. No glass or breakable containers are allowed. All mementos must be picked up by June 2 for those who wish to recollect them.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday celebrated on the fourth Monday of each May. It became a federal holiday in 1971 and is observed on the last Monday in May.

The holiday has become one of the biggest retail sales and travel weekends of the year for consumers, with more businesses opting to stay open.
